APO ON THE WALL BLOG ENTRY

APO ON THE WALL

Apo on the wall by Bj Patino is a poem that talks about the narration of a child’s point of view about his rigorous Father and the hanging photo around the wall called “Apo”. The poem tells the reality of life during the reigning of Marcos alongside with the Martial Law.

WHY YOU LIKE THIS POEM?

I had a hard time figuring out what the poem was trying to mean at first. It took me how many readings to figure out what it was trying to say. I liked how innocent the child was, and how his father wanted him to stay that way for now. However, I am concerned that his innocence will lead to something dangerous for him. In general, I enjoyed this poem because it was written in a way that resonated with me both now and in the future.

HOW IT MAKE YOU FEEL?

The image of Apo on the wall gave me a new perspective on the truth of martial law. This poem served as a living witness for Filipinos who lived during this time period. This also refers to the Filipinos' fear of the tyranny of Ferdinand Marcos' power and authority. It gives an impression of what martial law was like at the time. The poem made me feel as if I were there at the time of the martial law. The past is gone, but it must be remembered in order to have a better present and avoid making the same mistakes again.

WHAT ARE THE MESSAGE YOU GOT FROM IT?
It is a poem about the narration of a child's point of view about his strict Father and the “Apo” picture that hangs on the wall. The poem depicts the truth of life during Marcos' reign, as well as the implementation of martial law.

HOW IT AFFECTS YOUR APPRECIATION OF THE PAST AND THE PRESENT?
The poem has an effect on my understanding of the past and present. I respect Filipinos' tenacity, as well as those who sacrificed their own rights to provide us with the freedom they lacked. As a result, we must exercise our rights responsibly and apply what we have experienced in the past to the present in order to achieve the future we have always desired.
